Coastal Regions

Papuan Girl
See for yourself the unrivalled beauty and variety of scenery along Papua New Guinea's long coastline.  From tropical beaches fringed with palms to spectacular coral reefs and active volcanoes offshore.  The magic tranquillity of the coast is only matched by the people themselves.  You will be met by smiling faces and a cheery 'api nun' when visiting places like Madang.  There are many things to see and do.  Whilst most will think of the activities which take place on the water, such as the great underwater delights of our reefs and abundant fish life, there is an exciting world top side too.  See and experience a culture which will continue to live on for generations to com, taste the luscious tropical fruits and vegetables.  Many of the coastal areas bore the brunt of the land, air and sea battles of World War II.  Fulfil the childhood dream of touching a WWII fighter plane located in the middle of a jungle and not a museum.  Walk through natural jungles.  The coastal area has something for everyone.

McKie scenery
One should never assume that all Coastal townships and places are the same, quite the contrary.  Vanimo is the Capital of the Sandaun Province and located on the border of PNG and Indonesia.  There is a road between Vanimo and Jayapura and it is now possible to travel by road between the two countries by arrangement thus the only road link between the East and the South Pacific. The Narimo Beach Hotel and Sandaun Motel provide good accommodation.  Wewak has a lot of WW2 history and set along side white sandy beaches, the best hotel is Windjammer Motel, it is possible to organise tours to the Sepik River from Wewak, or if you prefer you can fly into the Karawari Lodge which is overpriced, but a good place to enjoy the Sepik Region.  Alotau is a base for many live aboard dive boats including the Melanesian Discoverer which operates cruises to the Trobriand Islands.  Rabaul is always a good stopever, a lot to see but since the eruption in 1995 the township has relocated to Kokopo where new hotels are now emerging.  Kavieng is amongst the most popular destinations in PNG, the township is located beside Nusa Harbour where you can visit some of the many islands and take excursions along the Buliminski Highway which extends almost the full length of the Island to Namatanai.  The best place to stay in Kavieng is the Maagan beach Resort.

Trodriand Toddler
Other coastal townships to visit include Kimbe where you have several good hotels and resorts including the Walindi Resort where again live aboard dive boats operate diving around Witu Islands, a beautiful series of volcanic and atolls off shore.  The Liamo Reef Resort provided four star accommodation in the heart of Kimbe.
Bougainville is one of the most beautiful Islands in the Pacific.  It has just gone through more than 10 years of internal conflict and is now re-opening its doors to tourism.  There are new village lodges and guest houses opening in Buka and Arawa.
